The IRS National Taxpayer Advocate released her annual report to Congress today. For the year 2021 the Taxpayer Advocate pulled no punches in saying “[t]here is no way to sugarcoat the year 2021 in tax administration…The year 2021 provided no shortage of taxpayer problems.”
The Taxpayer Advocate’s report states that the IRS had backlogs of 6 million unprocessed original individual returns, 2.3 million unprocessed amended individual returns, more than 2 million unprocessed employer’s quarterly tax returns and about 5 million pieces of general taxpayer correspondence as of December 2021. Some dating back at least to April with many taxpayers still waiting for their refunds.
The Taxpayer Advocates’ report does not bode well for taxpayers expecting refunds in 2022.
However all is not lost. E-filed returns fared much better according to the report with most issues related to errors. The most common being discrepancies between the return and IRS records. To avoid delays in your refund being processed it is suggested that taxpayers e-file the return and review for accuracy.
